The meter test is a simple "Do-It-Yourself" test that will tell you if you may or may not have a fresh water leak in your home. Follow the instructions below carefully and call American Leak Detection's office if you have any questions or problems. If after the test, you find that you do in fact have a leak in your home, please call us right away so that we can help you get it resolved before the leak causes any further damage to your home.
This test should be conducted for a 1-hour period, during which time no water is being used on the property.
Find your water meter, which is usually located in front of the house in a covered box near the street.
Write down the numbers indicated and mark the red (or black) triangle (or diamond) indicator on the meter.
Return to check the meter reading after 1-hour has passed.
If the numbers have not changed and the triangle indicator has not moved, you do not have a leak in your pressurized water system. If there does seem to be change in the numbers or movement, continue with the following steps.
Shut off all valves under all the toilets and make sure that there are no dripping faucets throughout the property. Repeat steps 3-5.
If there is no change in the numbers or movement, then you may have a running toilet that needs to be serviced. American Leak Detection now offers full service plumbing and is happy to take care of that for you. If the numbers have changed, this indicates water consumption even though water was not being used during the test, and you may need a leak detection.
